What is SPC Flooring? The Durable Choice
You may have heard the term "SPC" thrown around when shopping for vinyl flooring. But what does it actually mean, and why is it becoming the industry standard for high-quality vinyl?
Stone Plastic Composite
SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite (or sometimes Stone Polymer Composite). It represents the next generation of vinyl flooring technology. Unlike traditional vinyl, which has a flexible core, SPC has a rigid core made from a mixture of limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and stabilizers.
Why is SPC Better?
- Unmatched Stability: Because of the stone core, SPC planks do not expand or contract with temperature changes as much as standard vinyl. This makes them ideal for South African homes that experience hot summers and cold winters.
- 100% Waterproof: Like standard vinyl, it's completely waterproof, but the rigid core adds extra protection against spills and humidity.
- Impact Resistance: The dense core is incredibly hard, making it resistant to dents from dropped objects or high heels.
- Hides Subfloor Imperfections: Because it's rigid, SPC won't "telegraph" minor bumps or waves in the subfloor like flexible vinyl can.
If you're looking for a floor that can handle busy family life, pets, and the occasional spill while looking fantastic, SPC is the way to go.
