How to Clean and Maintain Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is famous for its durability and low maintenance, but "low maintenance" doesn't mean "no maintenance." To keep your floors looking pristine for years to come, it's important to use the right cleaning techniques and avoid damaging products.
Daily Maintenance
The biggest enemy of laminate flooring is grit. Sand and dirt particles can act like sandpaper, slowly dulling the finish over time.
- Sweep or Vacuum Regularly: Do this daily or every few days to remove loose dirt. If using a vacuum, ensure the beater bar is turned off to prevent scratching.
- Use Mats: Place doormats at entrances to catch dirt before it enters your home.
Deep Cleaning
When it's time to mop, less is more. Laminate is not waterproof.
- Use a Damp Mop: Never wet mop or flood the floor with water. Excess water can seep into the seams and cause the planks to swell or warp.
- Use a Specialized Cleaner: We recommend a dedicated laminate floor cleaner. Avoid soap-based detergents, wax, or polish, as these can leave a dull film on the surface.
- Spot Clean Spills Immediately: Wipe up liquid spills as soon as they happen.
What to Avoid
Never use:
- Steam cleaners (the heat and moisture can damage the core).
- Abrasive pads or steel wool.
- Chlorine or ammonia-based cleaners.
By following these simple steps, your laminate floors will retain their shine and durability for decades.
